Practice Patterns

Another week, another training recap. I like these because it allows me to see what my body can and cannot handle, where I have my best workouts, and where I start to fall apart. This week was my highest mileage week ever but that’s what we’re supposed to do before we taper back to normal after spring break to get ready for race season. My first 10K of the year is March 30th… it’s coming up fast!

Sun– 10 miles long run + yoga

Mon– 8 miles long run

Tues– 8.5 miles track workout (6×800 at 10k pace, 3:16, which we nailed)

Wed– 2.25 miles walking uphill on the treadmill. No school, no practice, so our coach had us do a 30 minute cardio workout (aka bike and elliptical for everyone else). Walking is the only cross training that doesn’t bother my knees so I went with that. Missed yoga though… oops.

Thurs– 8 miles “tempo” long run. Yep, we just weren’t feeling it so we took off for a long run instead of the 30 minute tempo we were told to do. But when we do our long runs we do them at a pretty quick pace so it wasn’t like we were totally slacking…

Fri– 7 miles track workout. We did a 20 minute warmup, 10×300 @68 with a 100 in between each, followed by 6×100 all out with 100 in between each, and another 15 minute cool down. Not much to say about it.

Sat– 15 miles with Christine. I was going to say “easy” but that’s not the best word for it since, let’s be honest, 14 miles is no joke for anyone. But it’s always fun to run with each other since we just gossip the minutes away and it doesn’t feel like it’s really that far. That’s the way it should be.

Total– 56.5

So this was a good workout week for me. I’m pretty proud of how it went overall. I didn’t really think about getting in a “certain amount” of miles. Even the 14 miler was an unplanned run “for the hell of it.” That’s the best kind of run. And week, actually.

Today I have off, possibly a full rest day, so I will be enjoying every moment spent with my extended family before I head back to school tonight!

I thought it might be nice to share with you my workout schedule since it’s the same every week. I’m sure you’ve noticed a pattern at this point but if you haven’t, I’ll let you into the brain of my coach. He’s a very routine guy; it’s why I like him. I don’t do well with surprises so that was a big draw for me in running all three seasons. I know what’s coming every day and if he thinks I’m going to be freaked out about a workout, he’ll tell me what it is in advance so I can mentally prepare for it. Like next week’s 10,000 on the track. Already preparing for that one.

oie_pngAs you can see, it’s the same thing every week, like clockwork. Except last week because it was a non meet week so we did a thursday and friday semi-“hard” workout.

Do you follow a workout routine every week or do you like to mix it up?
